AN UP-TO-DATE RECIPE.
Apropos of the industrial troubles which flourish in Australia, a writer supplies the following:—
The most shameless satirists in our midst to-day are the women who write cookery notes for the daily and weekly papers. They are like a Hague Palace shifted to the River Anere, like an apostle of vegetarianism in a slaughteryard. Their only function at the present moment is to stir envy and vain longing, holding visions of impossible baked meats before a household going hungry while Mother learns how to work the pump of a Primus. Instead of joking with us, they should write their recipes in the following fashion:— Swiss Lemon Pudding.—Mix 6oz of finely-chopped suet, if the butcher hasn't stopped delivering, with Mb of fine breadcrumbs, provided the baker's ovens are still at work, lib of chopped I apple, assuming that apples have been brought in from the fruit-growing districts, 4oz of sugar, unless the Government has commandeered the lot, the juice and grated rind of lemon left over from last September, if the rind hasn't altogether dried up. Put all, I when mixed, into a greased mould, any I idle machinery-works will supply the j grease, tie with a cloth, and boil the I pudding for 3$ hours, supposing there are enough picture-frames in the house Ito see. the job through. Turn out and I serve hot with a good sauce, hunger beI ing the best sauce and probably available.
