MINING PROBLEMS.
EFFECT OF ABSENTEEISM. NO SOLUTION FOUND. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, November 24. The miners' conference failed to find an effective policy for dealing wilh avoidable absenteeism. I! was admitted that the policy of moral suasion was unsuccessful, and that absenteeism slill amounted to 20 per cent, in some districts. The Executive Committee pro-* posed to give pit committees power to fine habitual absentees, but there was a hopeless division of opinion, some delegates urging that it was not the business of a trade union to penalise members for neglecting to work. The conference adjourned for a month.
