was born at Waiau, where he attended the school, and he was later educated at the Ashburton Convent and High Schools. Shortly after the outbreak of war he obeyed the call of his country and left New Zealand with the 3rd Reinforcement. After being in Egypt for a few weeks he went to Gallipoli, a few days alter the memorable landing of the Anzacs. He took part in several of the big engagements during three months, when he was invalided to Malta with enteritis in July, 1915. Having recovered, he returned to the Peninsula until the evacuation, after which he had a bad attack of rheumatism and was sent to Egypt. Just as his battalion was about to leave for Fiance in May, he contractj: (1 diphtheria, so he went with a ! later contingent in July. He remained in France up to the time of | his death. Mr T. O'Carroll's eldest j son Thomas who enlisted some j considerable time ago, was, after j having entered camp, retained on I the Home Service Staff, and is at present in the Base Records Office in j Wellington.
