A NOTED ENGINEER. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Reuter's Telegrams. LONDON, November 23. The death is announced of Sir George White, the pioneer of electric street traction. [Sir George White, Bart., was born nt Bristol in 1851. He was the first to introduce electric street traction in London, Bristol, Dublin, etc. He was chairman of several important undertakings, and interested in or controlling railway and otlicr industrial concerns in South Wales. 1 A SOCIAL REFORMER. LONDON, November 24. The death of the Rt. Hon. Charles Booth is announced. [The Right Hon. Charles Booth is best known as the pioneer of Old Age Pensions, a subject on which he wrote extensively in the early nineties. He was born in Liverpool in 18!(>, and married a daughter of Charles Zachary Macaulay in 1871. He was a partner in Alfred Booth and Co., Liverpool, from 1802 to the time of his death, and was president of the Royal Statistical Society from 1892-4.] A GREAT INVENTOR. (Received November 25, 0.20 a.m.) LONDON, November 20. Sir Hiram Maxim is dead. [Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim was born at Maine, U.S.A., in February, 1810. He is best known as the inventor of the automatic svstem of firearms, and as a member of ' the firm of Vickers, Sons, and Maxim. He was « chevalier, of the Legion of Honour and was knighted in 1801.]
