BALKAN SITUATION. Notwithstanding (Irecce's nerveless indecision, the situation in the Balkans promises well. What has happened in the past few weeks has proved that the Saloniea expedition was not the reckless adventure that many persons, some of them high in authority, believed it to he. Had the Allies quitted Saloniea it is certain that Rumania would not have participated in the war. After long delay, events in this theatre of war are justifying the foresight of M. Briand, the Trench Premier, who was mainly responsible for the decision to go to and to remain at Saloniea.— "Express." COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT. There will have to be some sort of compromise to make the reconstruction of Mr Hughes's broken Government possible, no matter how it is done. Hut the Opposition has had nothing to do with the trouble, and is consequently free to assist in any scheme for obtaining the one essential result—the re-establishment of government on some solid majority basis for the duration of the war.— "Daily Telegraph" (Sydney).
