A PLUCKY DASH.
ATTACK ON POLA. GALLANT TORPEDO-BOATS. Australian and N Z. Cahir intonation. ROME, November 7. The excursion of Italian torpedoboats into Pola harbour where the main forces of the Austro-Hungarian navy are sheltered behind their barrage, was a remarkable exploit. The plucky little torpedo flotilla on November 1 penetrated for six [miles down the Fasana Channel. There are land batteries throughout ! the channels and a big fort at Fasana. Each island is well provided with hidden batteries, yet the Italians I forced a way through the mine-fields and reached the southern extremity, where the channel narrows to a width of two miles. j The flotilla came within a fewhundred yards of six Austrian warships when they discharged their ; torpedoes. Unfortunately these ex- ! ploded against torpedo netting. The Italians escaped, despite i searchlights and batteries ashore. Though the flotilla was not fully re-; warded, it felt satisfaction three: !days later at sinking an Austrian i transport.
