Owing to the delay in the Riverina's departure from Sydney, there will be no intercolonial vessel arriving at Lyttelton this week. The Riverina Is due at Wellington on Saturday morning, direct from Sydney, and leaves on her return journey the same evening. Captain Edge, late of the Pohcrua, is now chief officer of the Tarawera. Mr Pyper, late chief ollleer of the Tarawera, is proceeding to Auckland on business connected with the Arahura. Captain H. Williams, late of the Te Anau, took over the Tarawera at Lyttelton yesterday, relieving Captain Cameron, who goes on holiday leave. , Captain J. Rankine, late of the Rosamond, went north last night, to take charge of the Kowhai, in succession to Captain Adkins. Some changes took place among the officers of the Kaitangata while that vessel was in port yesterday. Mr Daniels joined her as second engineer, Mr Lawless assumed the position of third, and Mr Ix>oney left for Duncdin, there to receive orders. A special session of the executive council of the Federated Seamen's Union of New Zealand Is to be held at Wellington on November 25 (says the "New Zealand Times") to receive the report of the delegates who recently attended the union conference in Australia. There will be representatives from Auckland, Duncdin, and Wellington. It will be decided by the council what course to be adopled by the union with regard to the report of the delegates. Whilst passing through the breakwater at Timaru on Tuesday morning the Somerset, which left Duncdin on the previous afternoon, collided with some of the outworks and damaged her rudder. The Dunedin agents for the vessel (Messrs Turnbull, Martin and Co.) state that the damage is not serious, and will be repaired at Timaru. The vessel will probably not be delayed by the mishap. Mr W. T. Young, general secretary of the Seamen's Union, leaves Wellington for Lyttelton to-day to appoint a paid secretary to the union here. He recently visited Napier for a similar purpose, where he appointed Mr James Sullivan, who will collect entrance fees and contributions, and assist to settle disputes. The Union Company advise that the cargo steamer Tancred Is expected to arrive at Wellington next Monday from San Francisco. The vessel will discharge the whole of her cargo at Wellington, totalling Cflflf tons, including a large quantity of case oil Mr C. Richardson joined the Mapouril ; «s purser on Tuesday.

Mr James D. Rell, third officer of the Kaiapoi, ha- joined the Kowhai as second officer, in place of Mr S. W. Kane. Captain A. 11. Burgess, of the Southern Cross, left Auckland for Sydney on Monday night. Mr 1". Kurneaux has joined the Monowai as fourth engineer, in place of Mr W. Kidd. Captain Ryley, late master of the Hum- | nui, is now in command of the Hororata. The Hinemoa returned to Wellington on . Monday morning from her round trip to I the southern lighthouses. The vessel was j fortunate enough to effect a landing at I Kahurangi Point lighthouse on Saturday, and landed at the Brothers on Monday morning, flu- Hinemoa will go on the Wei- . lington patent slip to-day, and will be I brought oil' again at the end of the week. | She will leave port next Monday for the ; lighthouses al Castlepoint, Stephens Island, the Brothers, and Jackson Head, and will return to Wellington about the end of next week. It is expected that the Hinemoa will get away from Wellington in about a fort- J night on her round trip to the northern lighthouses. | The 1". and S. liner Roscommon, which left Bluff on September !», according to | cable advice, arrived at Liverpool on No-I vember 1. Mr Wynn Williams, late assistant purser of the Union Company's Makura, and now I on the Waihemo, in Auckland, speaking of the barquentine Daniel, said:- "She is now at Newcastle, and has been fixed to load a cargo of coal there for Tiniaru and Auek- : land. She will come to Auckland, via Timaru, and should get here about Christmas. Captain Birch is still in charge." > doing up from Lyttelton to Wellington the Mararoa had a hard battle with the elements during the latter stages or the journey on Wednesday morning. The weather was line for the first five or six hours out, and then she .struck a hard northerly gale, with increasing seas, till entering Cook Strait. Here the full force of the storm was met. The vessel behaved splendidly, but pitched and tossed about a good deal. On one or two occasions big senses were , shipped, and, generally speaking, things were unpleasant for those on hoard, the women suffering most. The Mararoa was n full ship, having on board many excursionists who were returning from the Christchurch races, and many of them will have cause to remember the final stages of their trip. Despite the weather experienced the Mararoa was only a little over an hour late in berthing at the Ferry Wharf. The Ilimitangi also had a very rough trip up from Lyttelton. j The gale seemed to increase during the day. and late on Tuesday night the Kaiapoi, 2003 tons, which left Wellington at 4.15 p.m. on Wednesday, had to put back into port. The Opawn was to have left for Blenheim on Tuesday night at 8 o'clock, but the captain did not consider it advisable to put out. i YSABEL I ROM SURPRISE ISLAND. I The Scales barquentine Ysabel arrived at Auckland on Tuesday from Surprise Island with 20(1 tons of phosphates. Her subsequent i movements after discharge have not yet . been announced. ' The hospital ship Marama, which has been placed on a fresh charter, arrived in ' the stream in Wellington shortly after <> o'clock on Tuesday evening, and berthed at the King's Wharf at an early hour yester- , day. After her overhaul at Port Chalmers she is looking spick and span, and the of- , licials who inspected the vessel this morn-j ing speak of her as being an even better fitted up boat than when she left New Zealand on her first charter. The explanation is that various improvements were made j while the vessel was at Home. The Marama has not been thrown open for public inspection, and as she will make an early depar-1 lure the probability of this being done is remote. j
