"OUR DAY."

£7OOO OBTAINED. SELF-DENIAL WEEK PROPOSED. The Executive Committee of the "Our Day" Appeal Fun.l met yesterday afternoon. Mr J. A. Flesher presided, and there were also present: Messrs A. E. G. Rhodes, P. L. Ilallenstein, E. Nordon, W. T. Robinson, J. A. Panuett, G. E. Rhodes, C. T. Newton, W. B. Fox, and Lieut.-Colonel Cresswell. The chairman reported that the grand total from all sources to date amounted to £7193 19/2, including £IOOO from Akaroa, and £216 8/4 from New Brighton. This was satisfactory, as far as it went, but was not commensurate with the necessities of the case. They had only to look at the casualty lists coming in to realise that it was a question oi whether they ought not to keep their canvassing going. There were hundreds of people in the city who could afford a guinea, but who had not yet given anything, and if they would not bring their cheques along the committee would have to go for them. Mr Nordon said that he would like to draw attention to the splendid results following from the New Brighton and Akaroa canvass, and he would move that a letter of appreciation should be sent to those districts. It mi<:ht serve as a stimulus to others. The resolution was carried. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes moved that a general vote of thanks should be accorded to all who had assisted, including the heads of the sweets and flower stalls, the Roman Catholic stall, the produce stall, the sales depots, Mrs Davis (tea tent), the Young Women's Christian Association, the lady eollee tors, outside branches, and Messrs P. Tiolove and E. Nordon. The motion was carried. It was also decided to send letters of thanks to the Automobile Association and others who had helped. Mr Nordon reported that arrangements had been made for a collection among the members of the Masonic Craft; also, that the Anthony Wilding Art Union books were ready, and £3O worth had been sold. The Opawa Bowling Club wrote, enclosing the sum of £.'j 1/-, collected for afternoon-tea sales on the occasion of the opening of the season. Dr A. F. J. Mickle wrote suggesting that further steps should be taken to augment the fund, and suggested that a week of self-denial effort might be arranged, so that the fund might be brought to £20,000. Mr Flesher said that if the people of the Dominion would do without one meal a month, and would devote the proceeds to the fund, at only Gd per

meal it would mean £.100,000 from >ew Zealand. I On the ir.otion of Mr Nordon, seconded by Mr Robinson, it was decided to adopt Dr Mickle's suggestion of a short and sharp campaign for funds, to be carried out between October 9 and 16. On the motion of Mr E. Xordon, it was decided to make a special appeal to the Labour unions. Mr Robinson said that since the depot was opened, an amount of £6945 0/5 had been received, of which £5453 had been paid to the Red Cross Fund, leaving in hand a balance of £1487 6/5. Those connected with th*e depot felt that money was urgently needed now, hence it had been decided to give £SOO to the "Our Day 1 ' Fund. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes pointed out that the depot had previously paid in £ir»:sß. so that with the Dew donation of £SOO the total amount would be over £2ooo—a very handsome donation, indeed. It was decided to approve of the proposal, and a vote of thanks to those conducting the depot was passed. The. following additional subscriptions have been received for the Red Cross appeal for money to alleviate the sufferings of o;:r sailors and soldiers on all the battle fronts: —Amount previously acknowledged £?.C6I 0/1 (less £25 from Graham.
