VIOLET DAY.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. OVER £IOOO REALISED. A meeting of the Violet Day Committee was held in the Art Gallery to-day, Miss R. Tabart presiding over a good attendance. Miss Tabart said that they could all congratulate themselves on the success of the day. The patriotism of the people came out in the fact that the cause of the Belgians was so much at heart. Special thanks were due to the pickers. Next came those who made the violets up into bunches. Great credit was due to both these sections, also to those who lent their cars. There was reason to believe that the Government would subsidise the amount collected. The following resolution was then carried:—"That, in handing over the proceeds of Violet Day to the Belgian Fund, it come as a recommendation from the committee that the executive obtain a Government subsidy of £ for £." The following was the financial statement for Violet Day:—Amount received through collecting box<>s, £745 14/10; result of auction sale in Square, £195 5/-; sale at Addington (per H. Matson and Co.), £l4; sale at Addington (per Pyne and Co.), £3 7/-; flowers from Mrs Anderson (sold by Miss Hobbs), £1 5/3; flowers sold at the Hurunui School (per Miss Dierce), £1 2/6; flowers sold at Art Gallery on August 31, £2 3/5. It was decided to award Miss I. ; Munro the lady's gold watch for the j most successful collector. It was con|sidered by the committee that she made the best individual effort. Mr W. H. Clarke moved a special vote of thanks to the Ladies' Committee who had been responsible for the success of the function, and particularly to Miss R. Tabart. This was carried unanimously. Special reference was made to the efforts of Strange and Co., Mr and Mrs Souper, Beath and Co., Mr McDonald, Carey and Co., Ballantyne and Co., Mason and Struthers, A. Rattray, Geo. Fry and Son, Gas Company, Art Society, Mrs Hardcastle, the motor garages and the chauffers. A special vote of thanks was accorded Mr Donaldson for his excellent services. Mr Donaldson suitably responded, stating that £IOOO from the . sale of violets was a splendid record.
