SUCCESSES ON THE SOMME.
NO SURPRISE TO THE GERMANS. Australian, and ti.Z. Cable Association. (Received August 18, noon.) PARIS, August 17. Tbe "Petit Parisien" states that the French successes on the Somme on Wednesday were not a surprise to the Germans, who were fully aware that the attack was imminent, after two days' bombardment, but the German artillery was no match for the French. ' The French losses were not heavy. The Germans still hold Guillemont and a portion of Maurepas, thanks to the proximity of Gombles, which is a veritable fortress.
