A CRY FOR AID. In view of the ricent appeals by the I,ord Mayor of London and of the Duke of Norfolk, as Chairman of the National Fund for Relief in Belgium, for further help for our starving Allies, the Committee of the above Fund once more confidently address the generous public of Canterbury to what they trust may be a final effort to minister to the dire distress and suffering of sorely stricken Belgian people. They do not ask for large donations, however acceptable such would be, but for SUSTAINED MONTHLY contributions from a shilling upwards, according to individual circumstances, so as to enable them to claim the FULL Government subsidy of £ for £ on the amount due from Canterbury each month, which the contributions .for some " le past have not allowed them to do. need not be a severe tax on anyone, and the committee feel all the more justified in making the appeal to the public, since certain local bodies in North Canterbury, including the Christchurch City Council, have failed to contribute their quota. The following is an extract from the Speech of the Right Hon. H. H. Asquith, Prime Minister of England, speaking at the first annual meeting of the National Committee Tor Relief in Belgium, held at the Mansion House, London, on May 4th, 1916: , "The enormous volume of snipping and food supplies rendered necessary, naturally brings the operations of the Neutral Commission under the closest supervision of the Admiralty and the War Office here. 1 am glad to be in a position to say on behalf of those departments and of His Majesty's Government that we are convinced that the relief food reaches the Belgians and the French, and reaches them alone." Contributions will be received by C. W. REID, Hon. Treasurer, G. L. DONALDESON, Secretary; Or THE OFFICE OF THIS PAPER-
