Replying, in the House of Representatives yesterday, to a question by Mr W. H. Field., our Parliamentary reporters savs the Hon. .las. Allen (Minister of Defence) said the Government ha 1 icceived no official conurium-ation as to the employment, on service ci moro"boat men. The Government had cabled twice to ask for definite information, and no reply had been received, and yesterday the Government had again cabled to see if they could learn anything definite. With a view to raising the numerical strength of the Bth Mounted Regimental Band to 45 it has been decided to commence immediately a learners' class to be chieily formed from Senior Cadets and Territorials. Applicants for admission to the class are to meet at the bandroom on Monday evening next, when the preliminary arrangements and practice nights will be decided upon. In order to encourage the juniors a number of medals have been given by interested citizens, and it is anticipated that the more attractive method of completing Territorial military training will result in the formation of a strong junior band. .Junior members will be required to attend a few classes for the purpose of having their ability tested, before they become permanent members. Such preliminary classes will be quite apart from the military training required of the member. Experts' evidence as to the damage done to the motor cars concluded the case for the plaintiff in the civil action heard at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., in which Peal Geun. (Mr Thomas) proceeded against Herbert E. Dix (Mr Johnson), garage proprietor, Rangiora, to recover £4O 11/- for damage caused to plaintiff's motor car by a collision with defendant's car on April 10 last. Plaintiff further claimed £75 11/- for depreciation and general damage, and defendant counter-claimed for £O9 15/-, for damages done to his ea* as the result of negligent driving by the plaintiff. For the defence, Mr Johnston contended that, the defendant was travelling at a reasonable rate at the time of the accident. Edward James Pringle, the driver of the defendant's car, stated that he was travelling along the Papanui Road at between 15 and 20 miles an hour. He saw a car emerging from Norman's Road, and took a sharp turn to the right to avoid it. Plaintiff's car struck his and drove it into the gutter. The evidence of Robert Forsyth as to the car's capacity for speed, and of Mr Kennedy, who was a passenger in defendant's car at the time, having been heard, the Magistrate said tie re seemed to have been faults on both sides. Judgment would be for the defendant on the main claim, and the co'intcr-claim would be disallowed. No order would be made as to the payment of costs.
