It -was stated at the last meeting of the S.P.C.A. that the sum of £:!7 9/9 (in addition to a previous sum of £3oj has been sent Home for the Blue Crosa Fund.

At a sitting of the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr ('. E. Ferrier, J.P., two first offending inebriates were convicted and discharged.

A slight explosion, arising out of some chemical experiments, led to the Fire Brigade being called to Mr S. Hewitt's chemist shop, at the corner of Selwvn Strlfet and South Crescent Road, shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday after noon.' On arrival it was found that the fire had caused no damage.

The weekly parade of the New Zealand National Reserve, Citizens' Coast Defence Corps (Unit 13), was held in Lyttelton on Monday. A good muster under the 0.0., Captain J. T. Mr Hurst Seager will deliver the third.of his town planning lectures for the Workers' Educational Association in the Old Chemical Lecture Theatre, Canterbury College, at 8 p.m. tomorrow. In the course of the lecture he will deal with English and Continental city improvement schemes, and also with the scheme for the new Federal capital of Australia, Canberra.

The Rev. A. C. Lawry gave the third of a series of lectures on " Around the World in Sunshine," in the Rugby Street Schoolroom on Wednesday, choosing as his subject "With the Crowds in the Homeland." The lecturer easily secured the appreciation of his audience by his interesting description of scenes he had recently visited. Lantern slides were shown by the Rev. N. Turner.

Some idea of the war work being performed by the Overseas Club may be gained from the fact that up to the present £si>,ooo has been subscribed by its members to provide tobacco and comforts for the soldiers and sailors of the British Empire. This money has been sufficient to provide 60,000,000 cigarettes and over 80 tons of tobacco. Every subscriber to this fund receives a postcard from the recipient in the trenches. Local subscriptions may be left with Mr T. M. Charters at the C.D.C. rooms. The St. Albans Reehabite Tent met on Wednesday, and a letter was received from the district secretary announcing that a referendum would be taken on the question of postponing the session of the district meeting to February, 1918. One member was received by clearance, and one proposition for membership. It was resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Bros. J. W. and C. C. Willis, in the death of their late father. Bast Chief Ruler Bro. W. R. Esselbourn, down on final leave, was given a farewell greeting. The Chief Ruler, Bro. Watson, proposed the health of the guest, and the secretary presented him with a fountain pen on behalf of the brethren.

The results of a shorthand speed examination held last May, under the auspices of the Christclmreh Shorthand Writers' Association, have just been received from Sir Isaac Pitman & Sous, Bath, England. The following were successful in obtaining Fitman's first class speed certificates:—Misses Gwendoline Court and Nancy Buist, 1-0 words per minute; Miss Iris Rudd, 110 words per minute; Misses Iris Hartle, Ellen Lanauze, Blanche McKay; and Olive Young, 100 words per minute; Misses Honor Harvey and Florence McLean, 90 words per minute; Misses Winifred Hobbs, Nellie Hopkins, Vera Morgan, and Lilian Presants, 80 words per minute; Miss Hilda Cusac.k, 70 words per minute; Misses Emily Candy, Connie Cusack, Violet Karon, and Ethel Ledsham, GO words per minute. All the successful candidates were pupils attending Miss Pigby's Commercial School.
