NEWS IN BRIEF.

Sittings of the Supreme Court in Chambers and in Banco will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, respectively, at lOJjO.

The demand for farm labour continues slack, only ploughmen and cowmengardeners being asked for. While there are many enquiries for work on farms, a labour agent informed a Sun representative that the class of man asking for employment was not generally suitablo for this kind of work. Good, allround men were scarce.

The Hon. James Allen (Minister of Defence) Las received from the Officer Commanding the Wounded Information Bureau at Malta ten photographs of the Pieto Military Cemetery, for distribution to the next of kin of the ten New Zealand soldiers who lie buried there. Among these ten Anzacs who have made the supreme sacrifice is Trooper M. E. Brisbane, of the Canterbury M.R.

Before commencing the ordinary business at the Spreydon Borough Council meeting last evening, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Winsor) referred to the death of an old member of the Spreydon Road Board, Mr David Nairn, sen., who was a prominent resident of the district. His son had been a member of the council. Mr Winsor moved a resolution of sympathy to the relatives. The motion was carried, members standing. In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr C. H. Poole asked the Minister of Education (Hon. J. A. Hanan) what steps ho was taking to arrange for the extension of open-air schools. Mr Hanan said he was very much impressed with what was being done in this respect in other countries and the good that accrued, particularly to weak child'en. He had considered the various means of putting such a system into operation, and was keeping the matter in view.

At a special general meeting of the A. and P. Association yesterday afternoon, a resolution authorising the executive to borrow a sum not exceeding £2OOO for various purposes, including the purchase of three acres of land adjoining the show grounds, was carried. Some objection was raised by Mr Stewart •and other members against money being borrowed at the present time for the carrying out of improvements, but it was pointed out that the purchase of the land referred to was essential, and that the association would be foolish not to accept the opportunity to acquire it when its lease had expired. Our Parliamentary reporter writes that the running of cheap week-end trips to Hanmer was urged by Dr Thaeker in tho House of Bepresentatives yesterday. He asked the Prime Minister whether the Cabinet would see to it that these cheap trips were provided. He made the request because the soldiers were at Hanmer and their friends could not go to see them by reason of the cost of the trip—2(s/return. There were cheap week-end trips to Eotorua and to Mount Cook. Mr Massey replied that the matter was one for Cabinet, and he would be glad to place it before Cabinet at the earliest opportunity. Electric wheel-chairs are now being used successfully in Europe for wounded and crippled soldiers. Invariably the convalescent men prefer to direct their own chair than to have some one push them about. One of these chairs, which is of Swiss make and costs but a small sum, is equipped with a quarter-horse-power motor suspended between the steering and rear wheels. Current is supplied from a battery of 15 lead plate cells housed in three boxes beneath the seat. The battery is of 50 ampere hour capacity, and provides sufficient energy for a run of 30 to 40 miles. Five forward and five reverse speeds are provided. The steering and operating mechanism is of a very simplest. The half-vearly meeting of the Linwood Eecliabite Lodge, Enterprise Tent No. 76, T.0.E., was held on Tuesday evening. The C.E., Sister E. A. Bielbv. presided. The following officers were elected for the ensuing term: — C.E., Bro. J. 11. Needham; D.E., Sister E. Heyder; secretary, Bro. E. A. M. Leaver; minute secretary, Bro. T. Bradwell; treasurer, Bro. S. Robinson; stewards, Bro. W. Goodman and F. W. Kite; Levite, Sister Hawtin; Guardian, Sister Ellis; auditors, Bros. A. Duggan, W. C. Francis, and AV. Goodman; Juvenile Superintendents, Bro. G. E. Bielbv, sen., Sisters Mrs Bielbv, Mrs Leaver, and C. Kent; auditors to Juvenile Tent, Bros. Bradwell and Leaver; Management Committee, Bros. G. E. Bielbv, sen.. G. E. Bielbv, jun.. E. A. Stokes. J. H. Ncedham, W. Goodman, T. Bradwell, E. Leaver, S. Eobinson, F. W. Kite, and Sisters E. A. Bielby and E. Heyder.

Although the term "model borough'' as applied to Spreydou fibres in the alluring and seductive sale notices of land agents, there are also such people as its borough councillors, who survey with pride and local patriotism the side channels, drains, water supply, sanitation, and street lighting controlled by the municipality. But surpassing all these is the excellence of its well-laid and mudless roads and paved streets. These have become almost a religion. When, therefore, at last evening's meeting of the Borough Council, a complaint was voiced that a milkman was in the habit, when on his round, of driving his horse and cart on the sidewalks, in preference to the smoothly macadamised roads provided for his benefit, there was a gasp of incredulity, followed by a babel, as the whole council "took the lloor. What followed caunot be told: but a freely expressed desire was "to settle the scoundrel's hash!" GREAT EXCITEMENT!
