One of the pioneers of Soutkland, Mf Robert Miller, passed away at Mataura on Sunday, at the age of 75. He was born in Scotland, near Glasgow, and came to New Zealand in 1860. After working on various goldfields he commenced farming in Southland, where he liad resided until the time of his death. Advice has been received from Major D. B. McKenr.ie. of Gore, who returned to New Zealand last year in command of the invalided soldiers on the Willochra, stating that he will leave London on July 27 for New Zealand. He has participated in all the fighting in France since April. At the meeting of the Queen Election Executive yesterday the chairman, Mr W. H. Clark, said that he considered the committee could not disband without giving some memento for the good work performed by the hon. secretary (Mr G. L. Donaldson). He therefore had much pleasure in presenting him. with a gold watch, suitably inscribed. Mr Donaldson briefly returned thanks for the pit. entation. Lance-Corporal W. M. Murray, who has been reported wounded in France, sailed with the 6th Reinforcement, and was attached to the Field Gun Section. He was educated at Christ's College, Christehureh, where he was one ot the best athletes of his time. For two years in succession he won the Rhodes Cup ami Headmaster's Gold Medal for the best work in the gymnasium. He also took a great interest in rowing and other aquatic sports, and won many amateur swimming and sculling races.
