OBITUARY.
MR WALTER HANNAY
The news of the death of Mr Walter Hannay, which occurred yesterday at his home, Hawkesbury Avenue, St. Albans, occasioned deep regret in railway and shipping circles. Mr Hannay was in his 70th year, and has had a romantic and adventurous career. He was born in England, and at an early age he went to sea. There are few parts of the world which he had not visited, For some time he was collector of shipping tolls on the River Hudson, previous to which he was engaged in the shipping industry on the American Great Lakes. The Peruvian Navy offering attractions, he spent a considerable time in the service of that country, where he attained the rank of lieutenant. On arrival in New Zealand many years ago, Mr Hannay entered the service of the Railway Department, and held appointments as stationmaster at Bluff and Grcymouth respectively, before his transfer in a similar capacity to Lytlellon in 1899. During the 13 years he spent in Lyltellon, until his retirement on superannuation in 1912, he was extremely popular with all with whom he came in contact, earning by his tact and ability the confidence and esteem of the shipping and commercial community. In company with Mrs Hannay, he made an extended tour of Great Britain and the Continent in 1913. He then visited Belgium and France and other countries which since have been ravaged by the war. Deceased is survived by a widow, a son, and four daughters. His son is at present serving in Fiance, having enlisted in King Edward's Horse in August, 1911. Prior to his enlistment, the son was an engineer in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company.
