The great lake district between Riga and Dvin»k is of immense strategic importance, as it covers the road to Petrograd. The country is so spotted with lakes, large and small, that it resembles an irregular piece of lace. It is on this front that, as a cablegram states to-day, Hindenburg is preparing a smashing blow against Kuropatkin's army.
