GENERAL PETAIN, THE SAVIOUR OF VERDUN.
General Petain was born 60 years ago at Pas de Calais, and became a lieutenant in 1883. He made steady progress in his profession, and from the command of an army corps he has passed to the command of an army engaged in one of the most herculean tasks which the present war has brought about.
