ADVICE TO HERR HUGHES.

GERMAN OPINION OF AUSTRALIAN PREMIER. <, . PLAYING THE STRONG MAN, WITH NO RESPONSIBILITY. "Times" and "Sydney Sun" Services. (Received May (!, 8 a.m.) LONDON, May 5. The German Press loses no opportunity to give advice to Mr Hughes. The "Cologne Gazette'' publishes a part of his Edinburgh speech, headed, "A Strong Man from Australia." The "Gazette." says:—"Hen* Hughes enjoys a splendid reputation with the Press of England, by whom the tougher English statesmen are invited to copy his rough and ready, 'strike them dead' manner. "There is a great difference whether, like Herr Hughes, one is playing the strong man, with no further responsibility, or whether one lias to provide some sort of harmony between words and deeds. Mr Winston Churchill was lacking in deeds, so lie was hissed oil' the stage. "Herr Hughes continues, as a bold circus athlete, to swing paper-made hundredweights. It is a sign of English intellectual decadence that tins Australian is hailed as the ideal of statesmanship."
