Refugees from Trebizond lei) terrible stories of Turkish massacres of Armenians before the evacuation. Adults were taken to the city squares and shot, while children were thrown into the sea. Schoolgirls were sent to the harems. The Turks warned the (Jreeks that if they sheltered Armenians they would lie instantly shot. A thousand Armenians escaped to the mountains.
