Mr Asquith unveiled, in St. Paul's Cathedral, a memorial to Captain jScott and his companions. He said: "It would he idle to apply a conventional eulogy to Captain Scotl. Besides being" a great explorer, he was jone of the most courageous and most devoted of sailors. The story of Captain Oates's death will become a classic. - "These were men, showing in the iilim Polar twilight, without a witness, without knowing whether their record would ever reach Great Britain, a supreme quality for thoughtfulness, courage, and endurance—and this before the great ideal, which, on a world-wide stage, is now testing the national manhood. "While we are justly proud of our heroic warriors on sea and land, let us not forget the imperishable debt and the tireless example which the Empire owes to Captain Scott and his comrades."
