I A young woman named Dorothy Mann Lad a narrow escape from losing her life by bathing at New Plymouth the other evening. She was surf-bathing, •when she ventured out too far, and was 'carried away by the backwash. Although she is a fairly good swimmer, •she was soon in difficulties, iter cries for help were heard by some people on ;tho beach, and Messrs M. (Jollier and 13. Smythe swam out to her rescue. Mr Collier reached her first, and supported her untJl Mr Smythe came along, and started to convey the young woman to shore against a fairly Strong current. Mr 'Smythe had got; into shallow water With his unconscious burden, when he lapsed from his exertions, and Mr Collier took Miss Mann to the beach. ■Mr Smythe, who was completely exhausted, soon recovered.
