M. Aristide Briand, France's new Pre- ! mier, has made his own eareer. He was [a poor man and quite unknown when he I started in the traditional manner of ! French public men as barrister and ! journalist. Exceptional mental powers, ! rare gifts as speaker and organiser, and, ! above all, hard work, brought him to ■ the front. Entering the Chamber as a new and unknown Deputy in 1902, he j obtained the Premiership in J9O9 —proi bably a record in French polities. His | motto is one that might well find universal acceptance at present: "Let us ihave done with talk; the time for constructive work has come."
