TO-DAY'S CASES.

Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., presided over a sitting of/the Magistrate's Court this morning. DEUNKENNESS. Two male first offenders were each fined 5/-, with the usual alternative for being found drunk in High and Armagh Streets respectively. Another male first offender appeared on remand on a charge of being found drunk at Sub-Inspector Hastie said that the accused had incurred £2 12/6 expenses at the hospital. The Magistrate ordered the accused to pay the money; in default 14 days' imprisonment. Thornton Newsome, a second offender, pleaded guilty to being drunk in Office Eoad, Merivale. He was fined 5/- or 24 hours, and a prohibition order was issued against him. PETTY PUBLOINING. Elizabeth Emily Orchard was charged with stealing on December 22, at Christchurch, one pair of socks and two pairs of gloves, of a total value of 11/ Is, the property of Messrs T. Armstrong & Co., Ltd. .. '

Mr Cassidy appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Mr Bishop: These cases are getting very frequent, you know. It is all very well to come here and talk about these women; but she is nothing better than a common thief.

Mr Cassidy said that the accused took the articles, but they had since been returned.

Mr Bishop: She is fined £5 or one month's imprisonment. These women think they can thieve with impunity, and then come before the court and tell sopie pitiable tale about their children or their poor circumstances. CIVIL CASES'.
