FIRES.

SUSPECTED ARSON.

Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, December 4. What looks like a case of attempted arson occurred early this morning, when a big wooden structure in High Street, known as the Cafe de Paris, was discovered to be on fire. The brigade effected a good save, but a good deal of internal damage was done. The building was owned by J. Westlake, of Pahiatua, and was insured for £IOOO in the State office. The furniture was owned by the late lessee, W. J. Rountree, and was insured for £l5O in the State Office. Indications point to the building being set on fire in two places, but there is no evidence at present as to the perpetrators. Mr Rountree suspended business after the discovery of an incipient "fire at his premises a few days ago.

A STABLE BURNED. The City Brigade was called out this morning to a fire in a shed, used as a stable, at 14 Tudor Street, owned by Mr Solomon George. The shed and a set of harness were destroyed.
