TREATMENT OF REBELS. CAPE TOWN, December 3. During the discussion on General Hertzog's Amnesty motion, General Botha said the Government would be. glad to release the rebels, but the attitude of the Nationalist Party made an amnesty unsafe. The Government accepted Mr J. X. Merriman's amendment recommending clemency in individual cases. ITALIANS AT WAR. SEVERAL VILLAGES DESTROYED. AN AUSTRIAN REPORT. AMSTERDAM, December 3. An Austrian communique says:— "Italian artillery destroyed several villages behind our front in the Tohnino basin. "The enemy repcate'dly attacked the Gorizia bridgehead, but was unsuccessful." STATE-OWNED SHIPS. PROPOSAL IN FRANCE. PARIS, December 3. ..... The Government has introduced a Bill providing for the purchase of 50 merchant steamers to combat the high freights on foodstuffs and other necessaries.
