Mr G. H. Scales arrived from the north this morning. Mr A. Kaye returned from the north by the Maori this morning. Major J. 0 'Sullivan, Assistant-Quar-termaster-General, is on a visit to Christchurch. Nurse A. Pattrick, of New Brighton, left on Thursday evening to join the nursing staff of the hospital ship Marama. Captain Macdonald, marine superintendent for the Union Company, returned from the north by the Maori this morning. Visitors to Christchurch staying at Warner's Hotel include Messrs H. O. Browne, D. S. Ferguson, and J. E. Taylor (Wellington). Mr George Bitchener > of the, Hook, has been elected a member of the Timaru Harbour Board, in place of Mr John Black, resigned. Included in the Maori's passengers this morning were the Revs. E. Evans, F. W. Hayward, and T. Griffin, Captain Hughes, and Mr P. A. Herman. Messrs A. E. Donne and C. W. Rushbrooke (Wellington), and J. Harrison Jones (Dunedin) are staying at the United Service Hotel. They arrived in town this morning. Mr J. D. Ritchie, chairman of the Board of Land Purchase Commissioners and Land Purchase Inspector,, arrived in Christchurch from the south by the second express last night. Messrs F. Lincoln (Auckland), G. Benstead (Otekaike), H. F. Nees, and J. Scott (Dunedin), and E. Parry (Wellington) are visiting Christchurch, and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr J. F. M. Stinear was the recipient of a wristlet watch and an electric torch from the members of. the Technical College Old Students' Association. Mr J. H. Howell, director of the college, made the presentation. Mr Charles Brouu, who has been for many, years associated with -the Crown Iron Works (Le Cren and Laurenson), has been advised of his election as a member of the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, London. Nurse Hilda Flynn, a daughter of Mr Bryan Flynn, of Bishop Street, St. Albans, left on Thursday night to join the nurses' contingent which is leaving shortly for active service. Nurse Flynn received her training/ at the Hawera Hospital, and was subsequently stationed at the Waipukurau Hospital. Hearty congratulations were conveyed to Monsignor Brodie, Roman Catholic Bishop-elect of Christchurch, at a meeting held in the Hibernian Hall, Auckland, to arrange for the visit to Auckland of the Papal delegate to Australasia, in. connection with the Monsignor 's elevation to the espiscopacy.

'1094 Colonel Logan,, Officer Commanding , the Samoan Expedition, and now Ad* ministrator of German Samoa, has been granted leave of absence. The Prime Minister states that Colonel Logan will return to Samoa as Administrator 011 the expiry of his leave. Sir Joseph Ward, Minister of Finance, arrived in Christchurch from the south by yesterday's second express. He is at present staying with hi 3 son-in-law, Mr B. B. Wood. He spent the day in the city, and this evening he will re- , turn to Wellington. Sir Joseph Ward expects to be in Christchurch again next week, on his way to the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show. The residents of Willowby entertained Messrs D. and S. Osborne and Leslie " Dawe at a farewell social held in the schoolroom on Wednesday night, on the occasion of their departure for camp. The Rev. J. Oxbrow presided, and, on behalf of the residents of 'the distrifet, pres/nted each guest with a soldier's hotl-all. The local branch of the Red Cross Society also gave* each* soldier a parcel containing knitted socks, a Balaclava cap, and a pair "of mittens. The residents of East Oxford attended in large numbers at the Town Hall on Tuesday night %o bid farewell to soldiers departing for the front. Mr John Wells, chairman of the County Council, presided. The HonVD. Buddo, in/ a short address, urged the district to share in the honour of participating in the victory that would most certainly i come. Captain D. Simson showed a: number of lantern slides, and also gave a very interesting address. The speakers were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks, and presentations were made to Lieut. Gorton and Sergt. Seed, re- ~ turned soldiers, and to Privates t , Bonisch and Hyland.
