SHIPPING NOTES.

The Canterbury Shipping Company's Petone arrived at Lyttelton this moraUjg from Timaru, and will sail to-night for Wellington and Wanganui with general cargo. The coasting steamer Wootton left Nydia Bay at 2 p.m. yesterday, and is due here to-night or early to-morrow. It is reported that the schooner Lataina, 994 tons register, left Columbia River on October 8 for Lyttelton. If such is the case the vessel is now due. The steamer Inga will probably finish discharging her cargo of timber from Clarence River to-morrow, and will then load produce for Kaipara on behalf of the Union* S.S. .Company. The Japanese steamer Kwanto Maru left Napier early yesterday morning for Newcastle, after having completed the discharge of her cargo of superphosphates from Japan. The Kwanto Maru has been chartered to load coal at Newcastle for an Eastern port. The Westport Coal Company's CanopUs will not visit Lyttelton during the next couple of weeks, as the vessel is going to run two trips to Auckland from Westport with coal. Mr D. F. Smith has been appointed second officer of the Whangape,* vice Mr Dowling, who comes ashore for instructions. Mr Dee, late chief officer of the Kittawa, has joined the Komata in a similar capacity, relieving Mr Rutter, who has come ashore for orders. Captain J. Ross, late chief officer of the Moana, is now in command of the Union Company's Karitane, which is at present engaged in the Sydney-Tasmanian running. According to latest mail advices received from Sydney, the steamer Indian Monarch, which was abandoned at sea off St. Helena recently, had on board over 8300 tons of general cargo for New Zealand and Australia. This consisted of numerous items, including pianos, motor cars, clothing, paper, glassware, and tobacco. The value of this cargo is estimated roughly at about £200,000. Of the cargo in the vessel's holds 1733 tons were for Sydney, 1087 tons for Melbourne, (ill tons for' Brisbane, 1023 tons i for Dunedin, 914 tons for Lyttelton, 1763 tons for Wellington, 1052 tons for Auckland, and 185 tons optional, NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO.'S LINE. The Orari, now in Wellington, leaves there on Thursday for Tokomaru Bay, Gisborne, and Napier, returning to Wellington for final dispatch on December 15. The Iluapehu, having been delayed in f>ort Chalmers by rain, leaves this morning for Bluff, Wellington, and Auckland. The steamer leaves the last-mentioned port on December 15 for London.
