ROWING.

THE WEEK'S DOINGS. The Canterbury Club's President's Fours, rowed last , week, produced [Some very good races, and the form displayed was very fair. This club has suffered very much from the war, arid the crews were in the main a much younger lot than in the past, but what they lacked in experience they made up for in grit and determination. Dunsford again stroked, the winners, beating Pin well comfortably in the final, i Pinwell got rather bustled, and lost his length; otherwise he would have pushed Dunsford very hard indeed. Dunsford and Pinwell, by the way, are both married men, and it jwas rather unique, for the Canterbury Club at any rate, to have two benedicts fighting out the final. Guthrie's and Hewer's crews appeared to have suffered from want of training, but nevertheless they put up good races, Hewer particularly so. The final was a good race to Cowlishaw's. It was an even start, Pinwell getting away very nicely, but Dunsford got his crew swinging more quickly, and maintained his length. He beat Pinwell for Cowlishaw's, where the latter, when clear, in quickening, lost his length, and from thereon the issue was never in doubt. ' ,' The Trial Pairs were not up to the usual standard, the crews -not having taken their training seriously enough,' and their want of condition soon told on them. The winners, Chrystall and ; Ferguson, showed very good form for novices, Ferguson particularly so, and more, should be heard of them. Both are big and strong, have a nice swing, and their blade .work is fairdy clean. The club's Trial Doubles will be put on at once, and possibly .a doubles for : senior- members also, as there is a; chance of a patriotic regatta, being held at Lyttelton. The club has been very short of scullers for some time, so there is now a chance to bring on some of the older members still left in ,the ; club,. Both the. Christchurch .Boys' High" School and the Christ's College boys been putting in strenuous training lately, and the interschool races, whicb will be rowed off on December 17 and', 18, are being looked forward to with the greatest amount" of interest. The fol-' lowing is the crew to represent the ; Boys' High School:—A. F. McArthur; (Papanui), 9st 81b (bow); B: Alley: (Sockburn), lOst 31b (2); D. A. Waghorn (Akaroa), lOst 41b (3); W. A.; Fraser (Waddington), lOst (stroke); A.; Haines (Papanui),'3st 81b (cox). Coach, Mr .W.'M.. Stewart) late captain of the; Dunedin Bowing Club. The Union Bowing Club's President's Fours will be rowed off next week; Davis's crew has withdrawn, with the result that there are only : four crews left in the race. However, there should be some good racing, as the crews have been doing some fairly solid work. The Trial Double Sculls will be rowed : off the week following ' the President's Fours. I understand there! are nine crews competing in this race, so there should be a most interesting, contest. The Lyttelton Begatta Committee will meet to-morrow evening for the purpose of drawing up a programme and appointing officers for the carrying out of the regatta, which will be held on New Year's Day. The.rowing portion of the, programme will in all probability be similar to that of last year, with the exception,, of course, that the prize money usually set aside for these races will go towards augmenting the General Patriotic Fund, and certificates will be presented instead. Owing to the war the various clubs have .not been devoting a great deal of time tp training for the regattas. In previous years all the clubs were put-i ting in good solid work in the month of November, but this year the clubs do not seem to have yet even made a start in this direction. This fact can only be put down to the war, as the vast majority of men who entered in these races in previous years have enlisted, and are at the present time serving their country. All the clubs have responded very well indeed to the call for men at the front, but the Canterbury Club appears to be the most seriously affected. I believe there is a likelihood ! of this club having to go to the length of closing its doors while the war lasts. Despite all these drawbacks, however, the public can rest well assured of seeing some, fairly good racing at the Lyttelton Begatta. Owing to the number of members, of the Avon Bowing Club' who have enlisted, ahct are waiting to be called up, and in view of other meriibers enlisting, the executive decided to hold as many races as they could, so that when the members are wanted by the Defence Department they would be in good physical condition. The next club race will bo the Trial Fours for the new and old members. This event has brought forth eight crews, and, if all the crews roll up, there will be some good racing, as they are a very even lot. The race will be rowed off early next month. Following is the result of the draw for crews: — F. Agassiz (stroke), G. Byron (3), S. Moore (2), L. Davis (bow); A. Nightingale (stroke), H. Stillwell (3), A. Deyell (2), G. Greaney (bow); D. Harney (stroke), F. Weeks (3), S. Falloon (2), P. Kirton (bow); F. Byan (stroke), C. Gordon (3), H. Thomas (2), C. Sawtell (bow); F. Williamson (stroke*), A. Winterborno (3), J. Foby (2), A. Chidgey (2), F f . Brinsted (bow). OUTBIGGEB.
