CHARGE OF ASSAULT.
A LYTTELTON FRACAS. SEAMAN SAVAGELY ASSAILED. About 11 o'clock last night some excitement was caused at Lyttelton by a fracas, in which two seamen were implicated. Mr H. Donovan, a Customs House official, heard a disturbance and cries, and, upon investigating, he found a man lying, face downwards, on the wharf, whilst, another man held him down and struck at his head with a bottle. While Mr Donovan was attending to the injured man the assailant appeared. Messrs S. Gilray and T. Newton (Harbour Board watchmen) came on the scene. They captured and detained the alleged assailant until the arrival of Constables Bickerdyke and Joyce. The injured man was taken to the Casualty Ward, Where he was attended to by Dr Newell, who found it necessary to insert six stitches in wounds on the man's head. The arrested man, John Mcllveen, appeared at the Magistrate's Court, Lyttelton, this morning, was charged with assaulting John Sullivan, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. On the application of SeniorSergeant- Ryan, accused was remanded until to-morrow.
