MEETING OP COUNCIL. A meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. A. Flesher) and Crs G. H. Winny, F. Kibblewhite, J. Buxton, F. Holland, P. Cox, J. Ashley, E. M. Leaver, and F. H. Christian. The sanitary inspector of the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote reporting on the septic tank applied for by Mr Lamb. . The inspector said he was of opinion that with the present area of land available, permission should not be given for the erection of a septic tank. It was decided that the purport of the report be sent to, Mr Lamb with a request to close tlie tank forthwith. The Taumarunui Patriotic Committee wrote forwarding the resolution requesting the council to urge the Government not to enforce the Gaming and Lotteries Act during the present crisis, so as to enable art unions 011 a larger scale and with a larger scope of prizes, to be held for patriotic purposes. Cr Cox considered that the council should not interfere with the laws of the country. The letter was received. Messrs Cull and Prosser wrote acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the council stating that if they | paid £5 per chain for channelling, the council was prepared to form the footpaths on both sides of Victoria street. The letter stated that circulars had been issued to all owners in the street, asking for their guarantees for their .apportioned amounts, according to the size of thdir holdings. The letter was received. The secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association wrote' inviting the Mayor and councillors to atjtend a garden fete to be held at Mr Allan Hopkins's residence, "Saltaire," North New Brighton, to aid tlie Red Cross and Patriotic Funds equally. The invitation was accepted. Cr Kibblewhite that the rates for the ensuing year be struck, the general rate to be 3d and 5-12ths of a penny in the £ on the unimproved value, and the lighting rate to be iths of a penny in the £ 011 the unimproved value. The motion was seconded by Cr Buxton and carried. The following recommendations were adopted by the council That the Tramways Board be asked to give tlie newly formed road on the Esplanade north a good soaking with the sprinkler so that it may be rolled; that the banks on the reserve side of the above road be given more batter and the batter covered with broom; that those residents of Herring Bay who had applied for sand be informed that they would be permitted to take the sand required from tlie roadway at the junction of Drake and Blake Streets with Estuary Road, arid if it was delivered by the coiincil 1/- per load would be charged; that the Town Clerk make enquiries as to new lamps for the band rotunda; that Mr F. Kibblewhite be granted permission to construct a septic tank On his property, Union Street, subject to the consent of the district health ollicer; that the work askeel for by Mrs Weston, on Osborne Terrace, be done as soon as possible.
