SPARROW SHOOTING.

MATCH AT RANGIORA. The North Canterbury Gun Club held a £SO sparrow match of 12 birds at Mr B. Edwards's paddock, Rangiora, to-day. There, were 17 competitors. The following six competitors tied with 12 birds each, and divided the stakes:—J. Hickinbottom (handicap 20yds), H. Ayres (20yds), S. Preece (23yds), G. Cudby 19yds), W. Parson (22yds), S. Truscott (18yds).

The Waitara correspondent of the Taranaki "Herald" writes:—"An amusing incident happened when the band was about to play outside the Clifton Hall last week at the anniversary of the war meeting. A stray cow was noticed coming along the road, and the poundkeeper being there and the pound close at hand, he asked someone to open the gate, and promptly drove the animal in. On examining it for identification, he discovered, to his surprise, that it was his own cow that had got loose and that he had impounded." "I heard a good story the other day,'' Corporal Barton says in a letter written' on July 4 from Cairo to the New Zealand "Times." "During one of the advances, an Australian ' spotted' a Turkish sniper, so, making a detour, he got between the sniper and the Turkish lines. Then he proceeded to stalk the sniper. The Turk saw him, and, after one or two unsuccessful shots, made off. But the Australian gave chase, and suceeded in heading him towards the Australian lines. When the Turk neared the lines an Australian officer shot him, much to the indignation of the man who had 'started him up' in the first place. Going to the officer, the Australian said, 'What did you do that for? I could have got him that way half an hour ago, but I wanted to '' harpoon'' liim.' "
