TRADES AND LABOUR.

CANTERBURY TYPOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION.

The half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Typographical Association was held at the Trades Hall on Saturday evening. The president (Mr C. Shaw) occupied the chair, and there was a fair attendance. The union's delegate to the United Federation of Labour Conference (Mr J. W. Eober.ts) gave a full report of the proceedings, and a vote of thanks was passed for his report and work at the conference. Correspondence was received from the Technical College director, outlining a scheme for the training of apprentices. An interesting discussion took place on the matter, several members drawing attention to the failure of employers to properly teach apprentices their trade. It was decided that no action be taken until the union's delegates to the college had an opportunity of obtaining further information on the matter. It was decided to invite voluntary contributions, in response to an appeal from the New Zealand Volunteer Sisters, several members being of opinion that the care of wounded and sick soldiers was a function of the Government. Mr J. Petterd, the secretary, having notified his intention of resigning the office, nominations were called for, and Mr C. Kenn was elected. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring secretary for his work during his period of office.
