ARBITRATION COURT.

INTERPRETATION OF AWARDS;,

The Court of Arbitration has given several interpretations' in reference to the South Canterbury*" Timber Yards, Sawmills', and Coal Yards''' Employees' Award, and the North, . Canterbury Threshing Milis Award. Applications were made by the Iri-« spector of Aw r ards at Timaru and Christchurch respectively. With regard to the former award, the question submitted was: "A weekly hand is in receipt of £3 per week. . What * wages is he entitled to receive for having worked full time (45 hours), inclusive of the King's Birthday, for the week ending June 5, 1915?" The - answer states that the Court considered that the intention was to place all workers as nearly as possible on - the same footing as regards working on holidays and Sundays, so that if ' the day worked was one for which, the daily worker was . entitled to time and a-half, then the weekly , worker w r as entitled to a day and ahalf's extra pay. If it was one for/ which the daily worker was entitled to double time, * then the weekly worker was entitled to two days* . pay extra. In the latter award the following.., question was submitted: A millowner has paid his men piece rates, according to clause 5, (a)* but. has ... not paid for shifting time, under the impression that sub-clause (b) of clause 5 covered all shifts. Must he pay the men for shifting from stack to stack as provided in clause 7,? The Court's answer was as follows:—In the circumstances stated the mill owner must pay the men for shifting the mail from stack to stack ' as provided by clause 7 of the award.
