SCHOOL PRIZES.

BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL. The annual prize-giving ceremony of the Boys '. High School was held at the Canterbury College Hall last night, the] chairman of t>he Board <of Governors, Mr .1. C. Adams, presiding. There was a goiod attendance, and the ceremony was. interspersed with patriotic songs sung by the students, and an, interpretation of a scene from * 'Pickwick." T.li-c chairman congratulated the fooys on' their success during the year, -and referred to the value of the schools' training for the making of manhood as. well as 'providing sound education. The, reasons why the number of the students was not inci'easing fwas tjbat it needed r more thaii a certificate: for a boy to be admitted, and also he considered rthat sufficient indueenuftit was not offered to fooys from the country. The residential schooOs greater. attractions to parents in the country* and the Boys' High School should try to meet .such a need. In concluding he referred to the number of old High School boys Who were serving with the Expeditionary Forces, -seventy 'having, gone from New Zealand, while others, had joined the Tanks in England. The Mr C. E. BcvanBrown, read his annual report, in which it was stated that during the year the school had worked with success 4 both in jatudies and -on the playing fields. In the Imperial -Challenge Shield Competition the school had been placed first of the New Zealand Schools, and twentysecond" amongst the 600 schools of the Empire which "had competed. The report also, referred to the number of old boys who had gone to the war. Good attendance certificates were presented to forty children who had not missed a halfday during the year, and to forty-nine more v/lto had missed less than five half-days. Between them tliese represented some 20 per cent, of the children, and, in the opinion of Mr Large (the chairman), constituted something like a school record. The chairman announced that, owing to the good attendance the school had just managed to maintain an average of over 401 for tho year, and was consequently entitled to another assistant master, whose appointment would be recommended by the committee. On the call of the head master cheers and musical honours were given to Messrs Large and Martin, it being their last official appearance before the children, owing to the division of the district following the opening of the new school at Beckenham.
