• The Wellington Harboiir Board last night made; two provisional appointments to the pilot staff consequent on the pending retirelrient of Captain Johnson;' (harbourmaster) anil Oaiitain Shilling (deputy barbourmaster). The new pilots ave Captain J. Si>ence, promoted from the position of dredgemaster ob the dredge Whahariri, and Captain Alee Davis, chief officer of the steamer Arahurn. Yesterday afternoon the Shawj Savill, and Albion liner Corinthic sailed from Port Chalmers, for Auckland to continue Homeward loading. The vessel subsequently comes south t* Wellington to complete operations. Mr W. G. Mander, purser of the Warrimoo, went ashore at Auckland on sick leave, and his place bas been taken by Mr Campbell. Mr J. Darroch, chief officer of the Ulimaroa, who has lately been noting master of the Moorabool, has rejoined his former vessel. Mr A. S. Finey joined the Ulimaroa at Melbourne as assistant, purser. Mr \\", Walker has signed-on the Ngakuta as secofi'd •ffieer. Mr H. Hnntly has succeeded Mr W. D'Arcy as second officer of...the Kaniia, and Mr C. Grunt has joined t'hfe same vessel as third engineer.

Heavy rain having* •. delayed Ulimaroa at Sydney on Saturday last, it waS not until 10.30 )>.m. on Tuesday that-she arrived at Wellington. Bad weather, with heavy seas, was encountered throughout the trip, more particularly during th'e first day or two from Sydney, when strong north-easterly winds made matters none too pleasant for the passengers. ' The Ulimaroa is due to sail /or Lyttelton at 5 p.m. to-day,, returning to the northern port on Saturday morning, and sailing at it p.m. the .same day for Sydney and Melbourne.

According to a wireless-message received by the local agent* lor the Federal and Shire Line, the Surrey, bound from Liverpool to Auckland and Wellington, via Newcastle, is meeting with heavy wt'ather in the Tasman Sea. In consequence »li,e does not expect to reach Auckland until a.bout noon to-mor-row. Her arrival al Wellington, for which l>ort she has 2200 tons of 'general cargo, •feould be mad* about October 1, and at Lyttelton about five (lavs later.

To-day the waterfront at Lyttelton presented a rather deserted appearance, the only vessel of any magnitude in port being the ferry steamer Waliine." To-morro'tv the Ulimaroa is due from Wellington, and the Opawa, from Port Chalmers, should also reach .this port towards the end of the week. The Warrimoo will return froui the south on

Saturday and sail for tiie north in the exen? ing, and the Mokoia -will arrive the same day from Wellington, via East Coast ports and Auckland.

It is a generally accepted belief that the day of the sailing ship is fast fading, but to- : day in Lyttelton an unusual spectacle was afforded when steam-propelled vessels wtere considerably outnumbered by those which depend upon the wind as-their only means of making progress. The steamers in port were the Oponri, Wakatu, Taviuni, and Wahinc, while the sailing vessels were the Italian ship Combermere, the Norwegian barque Aetiv, the brigantine Aratapu, the scow Uniee, and the schooners Lily, Eliza Firth, and Morning Light. The Ulimaroa, which is due at Lyttelton to-morrow, has transhipments ex the steamers Aldcrham, Katoomba, Otway, and Anglo-Egyptian. The following are the principal lines: —60 canes tablet sugar, 40 bags ; rice meal, 230 bundles galvanised wire, 60 bags rice, 18 cases tobacco, 250 boxes currants, 160 bags superphosphate, IJ9 bags ground bark, 219 cases fruit, 619 packages and 380 chests tea. She leaves for Dunedin in the afternoon, coming back on Jier return for northern ports on Wednesday.
