RUGBY MATTERS.

THE CANTERBURY UNION. A meeting of the Managing Committee of the Canterbury Eugby Union was held last evening. Present:—Messrs G. H. Mason (president), F. T. Evans, F. D. Kesteven, C. Buchanan, S. F. Wilson, C. Hasell, A. E. McPhail, A. E. Byrne, L. Corbett. C. Evans, and C. W. Hervey (secretary). William Smythe, who gave his age as 19 years, arid who is a members x>f the; Sydenham League Club, applied for reinstatement as an amateur. He stated that he had realised now that he had made a mistake in leaving the Eugby Union game. Before joining the league he had played for the Sydenham Rugby Union Football Club, and he wished, if reinstated, to play for the Merival Club. Members of the committee stated that Smythe had joined the League in pique at not being tried as a representative player last year when he was under the Union code. He.had played the League game throughout the season just ending. The application was refused.

The financial statement in connection with the Otago-Canterbury match, in conjunction with which the Canter-bury-English ladies' hockey match, showed that the Union's net receipts from that match amounted to £lO6 7/5. The net amount due to the Canterbury. Ladies' Hockey Association was £Bl 5/4, which included £55 5/- secured by the association by the sale of tickets away from the park. The gross "gate" was*£24s 2/6, of Avhich £49 0/6 went Lancaster Park, Limited. The statement of accounts presented by the hon. treasurer (Mr Byrne) showed a credit balance of £299 19/6. Accounts amounting to £145 4/5 were passed for payment, and these, with others to come, have to be deducted from the credit balance stated.

A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Byrne for his services ;is treasurer during the season, and he-Syas congratulated on the success of the season's financial operations.
