BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. The adjourned meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held on Saturday evening, 'when there were present: The Mavor (Mr G. W. C. Smitlison) and Crs* Bolton, Brewer, Stuart, Rankin, and Barr. REPORTS. The Finance Committee's report showed balances as follows:—District Fund Account, debit of £642 13/1; Gasworks Loan Account, credit of £>2B6 3/8; Gasworks Revenue Account, debit of £330 15/-; Creek Outlet Loan Account, credit of £755 2/10—The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £269 0/10 were passed for payment. The town clerk reported that, with the foreman, he had interviewed Messrs Pidgeon and Smith in connection with the Cave Terrace Road, and they were willing to permit the council to take sufficient of their land to provide turning room at the corner, conditional upon the council paying the cost of survey and transfer, and on their erecting a stone wall along the frontage, with one set of steps and the spaee at the back of the wall filled in. The wall would be approximately 45 feet in length by 2ft. 6in. to sft.' in height. The total cost to the council would be about £3O. Mj* Pidgeon had submitted his offer in writing, and Mr Smith had also agreed to do so. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, and the town clerk instructed to obtain Mr Smith's offer in writing in the meantime. The town clerk also reported that in connection with the unpaid fees sued for on huts at Taylor's Mistake, judgment had been given for the council in one case, and in several other cases the defendants had consented to judgment. Proceedings were being taken against others who had not paid their fees. The report was adopted. ELECTRIC CURRENT. Mr L. By-ks, electrical engineer of the Public Works Department, wrote stating that the Department was now in a position to enter into definite arrangements for the supply of electric power to the borough for retail 'distribution or other purposes. Cr. Barr wished to know if it would cost anything to have an interview with Mr Birks. ITe thought that it might settle the opinion of some people that the borough could get electricity merely for the cost of setting up the poles. Personally the speaker was of the opinion that electricity was going to be much dearer in Sumner than most people had imagined, but Mr Bilks could give the council some idea as to its cost. Wherever the current was cheap it. was because there were factories using the power throughout the day, and it had been stated definitely that when the district had a number of factories the people got a cheap power for lighting purposes. Sunnier had no factories whatever, ami it would therefore be useful for the council to obtain information from Mr Birks as to the cost of the current. It. was decided to communicate with Mr Birks, asking him when lie could meet the Lighting Committee.
