Colonel Bnow left for the north on Saturday evening. Mr J. A. Anderson, of Ashburton, is at present in town. Mr A. Kaye left for the north on Saturday evening.

Mr J as. Wilson, of Tiinaru, is at present in town, staying at Coker's Hotel. Mr J. A. Anderson, of Dunedin, is at present visiting Christcliurch, staying at the Clarendon Hotel.

His Honour Mr Justice Sim arrived in Christchurch from the West Coast on Saturday evening.

Mr W. Belcher, secretary of the New Zealand Seamen's and Firemen's Union, left for the - north on Saturday evening.

Bone, marine superintendent of the New Zealand §hipping Company, arrived from Wellington yesterday. Mr G. Reeves Whiting, of Wellington, arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday, and is staying at Warner's Hotel.

Messrs John Imrie and W. D. Campbell, of Timaru, arrived in Christchurch by the second express from the south on Saturday. Messrs D. C[ Halbery and N. Galbraith, of Wellington, arrived from the north yesterday and are staying at the United Service Hotel.

Messrs C. H. Gresson, A. Le Cren, G. Kerr, and R. L. Fisher, of Timaru, returned south by the first express this morning.

Mr Alex. Macintosh, superintendent for Messrs Dalgety and Co., will leave London on his return to New Zealand $t the end of August. At St. David's Church, Sydenham, last evening, Messrs Alex. Reid, W. Crawley, and A. Still were ordained as elders of the church by the Rev. C. Murray, M.A.

At the meeting of the Veterans' Association on Saturday evening, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Captain Walker was carried in silence, members standing.

Burnes at Wellington, arrived from Dunedin on Saturday night. In addition to injuring his nose and bruising himself generally, Mr John Mackay, Government Printer, broke one of his ribs through falling from a ladder in his office last week, and will not be about again for some days. The Rev. Duncan Rankin, at present vicar'of Naseby, Otago, has been appointed curate at St. Mary'a\ Church, Merivale, and will take up his duties on September 1. , The Rev. T. Jasper. Smyth is at present assisting Archdeacon Gossett.

The death is announced of the Rev. Charles Carter,, formerly Baptist missionary to Ceylon, aged 86, at. Auckland. He translated the Bible into Singhalese and compiled an FnglisliSinghaiese dictionary.—Press Association. The New Zealand Government Tourist Department is endeavouring to obtain the services of Conrad Kain, the famous Alpine guide, for next season at Mpunt Cook. Kain has been twice in New Zealand. Last .season he came as guide to Mr Otto Frind, a member of the Canadian Alpine Club, and did quite a lot of climbing, including the traverse of Mt. Cook.

Mr-Hiram Hunter leaves for Wellington to-night, to attend the conference of arbitration unions as the representative of the Canterbury Drivers' Union, and will afterwards attend the executive meeting and the annual conference, to be held on Tuesday week, of the Social Democratic Party, of which he is president. Mr J. Niud, president of the Ohristchurch Tramway Employees' Union, also leaves for Wellington this evening to attend the arbitration unions' conference as the delegate of his union.
