HONOURING AN ATHLETE.
MEMORIAL TO THE LATE W. F. SIMPSON. A movement is afoot among amateur athletes of Canterbury to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of the late VV. H. Simpson, one of the finest distance runners Australasia has ever produced. Simpson's New Zealand record of 9min. 42 l-ssec. for two miles, established, in Christchurch in November, 1901, and his Australasian record of 14min. 49 sec. for three miles, recorded at Auckland in December, 1901, still hold good. It is proposed that a memorial stone be erected on Simpson's grave, to recordthe appreciation and esteem of amateur athletes for one who was not only a splendid runner but also every inch a man. The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Assoication has expressed hearty approval of the proposal, and has voted £5 5/towards it. The movement was originated by two gentlemen who were well known on the amateur running track a few years ago—Messrs H. Williams, care of Butterwortn Bros.> Christfihurch, and W. Anderson, of Asaburtoa—and they will be glad tft receive subscrip« tions towards the memorial.
