The monthly meeting of the Borough School was held last evening, when there were present: Mr F. Lane (chairman), Messrs Will, C. I. Jennings, T. W. Ambrose, B.A. (principal), W. Marshall, H. Boyd, R. Ball, J. Sansom, and the Rev. Fendall.

The principal's monthly report showed a very satisfactory attendance. Dr E. Barker had visited the school during the past month and examined Standard 11. and found it very efficient.—The principal and his staff were congratulated by the board on the excellent report received from the inspector.

A letter was received from Mr B. A. M'Keown tendering his resignation as assistant master owing to his promotion to first assistant at the Kaiapoi School. —The resignation was accepted with regret, several members of the board testifying to the able and efficient manjfer in which Mr M'Keown had carried out his duties, and it was unanimously agreed that the chairman send him a testimonial expressing the. board's appreciation of his excellent work during his stay in Eaugiora. The head master reported that the North Canterbury Sub-union had written asking him to return to them the football shield they had held since 1907, and he asked the board's opinion on the matter, seeing that the school had won it for five years in succession and last year there were no challengers.—The 'board instructed the principal to retain the shield until it was won from them. A letter was received from the Education Department stating that it had received nine applications for the position of assistant master for the Borough School, and submitted three cf the applicants to the board. —A ballot resulted in the appointment of Mr L. G. Austin to the position.
