Mr J, Redmond, in a letter in the Irish Press, says there is no foundation for the statement that the National Volunteer movement is hostile to the Irish Party's policy. Up till two months ago he felt that the movement •vras < premature, but Sir Edward Carson's threats, the Curragh occurrences, * and the gun-running had vitally altered the position. The Irish Party had then instructed its friends to sup- ' port the Volunteers.

The anxiety felt in political circles chas been increased by Mr Redmond's pointed recognition of the Nationalist Volunteers; a step which is intended to .'concentrate the Nationalists against the 1 Bill. .-"'.-' This accounts for Mr Asquith's inability to announce any progress. . > The "Westminster Gazette" declares • 'that it is not surprised at the spread of ' 4fche Nationalist volunteer movement. / appeal to force waa bound to a retort, especially when the. Nationalists' continued reliance on constitutional methods was interpreted as J a lessening desire for Home Rule.
