HUGH GRAINGER'S CASE.

» STRONG BAR ENGAGED. NO EVIDENCE OFFERED. Hugh Grainger, described as a bookmaker and a billiards saloon proprietor of Lyttelton, was charged that on April 21 he had received the sum of £IOSO in cash from Edgar F. Neate on terms requiring him to pay the same to certain persons, and had fraudulently omitted to account for the same as required, before Messrs W. Barrett and Andrews, Justices of the Peace, at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Much interest was taken in the case as the public had convinced itself that it was about to learn something of men who "follow the horses." The public was keener still when it was noised abroad that Mr A. C. Haitian was appearing for the complainant, and Mr T. M. Wilford for the defendant. The curious were disappointed, for the case lasted less than three minutes. The charge was called and Grainger, who had been on bail, entered the dock, smiling. Mr Wilford: I appear for the accused, if it please vour Worship —mv name is Wilford. Mr ilanlou: .1 appear for the complainant, and have no evidence to offer. Mr Wilford: in that case 1 ask that the case be struck out. Mr Barrett, for the Bench: Struck out accordingly.
