MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A male first offender for drunkenness was fined 5/-, in default 24hours' imprisonment. AN UNDESIRABLE. Ernest Joseph Wells was charged that he was an idle and disorderly person having insufficient lawful means of support, and further that he stole yesterday the sum of £2 the property of James M'Lochlin. Sub-Inspector M'Kinnon said that M'Lochlin had come into town yesterday from the country with £8 in gold, and some notes and silver, in his possession. He met accused in an hotel dive, and afterwards went with him to the Occidental Hotel, where they were refused drink. They then went into the right-of-way, where it was alleged accused attempted to rob M'Lochlin. The latter closed wi,th him and called for the police. When a constable came accused gave answers as to the cash he had in his possession, which did i.ot agree with each other or with fact. Both were arrested for drunkenness. Accused pleaded not guilty. M'Lochlin and Constable O'Brien, who made the arrest, gave evidence in support. Detective Ward and Detective Began gave evidence that the accused did no work, did not support his family, and loitered about the hotels u shadowing'' drunken men. His Worship said he would sentence accused to three months' imprisonment for drunkenness, but would dismiss the other eharge as the evidence did not seem to be sufficient. REMANDED. On the request of Chief Detective Bishop Norman Frazer was remanded

Stringer, J.P.) A first offending inebriate appeared at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court this morning, and was convicted and fined 5/- and costs.
