A RUMOUR DENIED.

AUSTRALIA'S ARMY.

FORCES NOT TO BE CRIPPLED/

By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright

(Received March 10, 9.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, March 10.

Senator Millen, speaking at a bnaquet in honour of General Sir lan Hamilton, said he wanted to dispel the apprehension whieh had arisen over the statement of economy and retrenchment in regard to the cost of the defence system. The Government did not intend to cripple the forces, and he dissociated himself entirely from any cheeseparing policy, that sought to effect retrenchment by cutting down officers' salaries, whether civil or military. The fact that £1,500,000 more is being .expended on defence was a sufficient guarantee that the Government was not going to starve the army of Australia.
