COUNTY COUNCILS.
MOUNT HERBERT. The monthly meeting of the Mount Herbert County Council was held on Monday last in the council chambers, Purau. Present: Crs. O. Bradley (chairman), A. R. Fleming, H. Field, Q. C. Manson, J. Hunter, J. E. Davenport, and R. Allan. An apology was received from Cr. L. M. Wilson.
The county solicitor wrote with reference to the practice of burning gorse and broom on the roads to the danger of adjoining properties. The clerk' was instructed to make further enquiries in the matter from other local bodies.
A complaint was received from Dr. T. W. Pairman to the effect that fires which had been started on the Beach Rc»d had burned through his orchard, doing considerable damage to the trees and fences. The council resolved to consider the lettec after further enquiries had been instituted. The council appointed Mr H. J. Beswick, of Christchurch, county solicitor. On the motion-of the chairman it was, resolved to protest against any increase in city representation on the Lyttelton Harbour Board. It was also resolved to wait on the board in reference to the two charges at present being made for freight from the outlying jetties. It was decided to add 10 per cent, to all rates unpaid by March 31.
