SPORT ON THE WATER

DOMINION ASSOCIATION FOR CONTROL YACHT AND SPEED EVENTS The question of the formation of a Dominion Association to further the interests of inter-provincial yacht and power craft racing and championship events is exercising the close attention of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association. This authority has forwarded suggestions for preliminary rules for inspection by kindred bodies in other parts of New Zealand, following instructions for their drafting given by tho last Sanders Cup conference in Auckland last February. The suggested rules are confidential for the time being. In a circular to other associations, the A.Y.M.B.A. states:—sub-com-mittee of this association has formulated preliminary rules which it is forwarding for further suggestions, alterations and so on, as seems best by the centre concerned. Tho suggestion’s cannot be regarded as complete, for they liavo not yet been agreed to by the various clubs affiliated to this association. It is thought more prudent to wait and have the opinions of other centres before placing the matter before the clubs for their approval. “It is suggested,” the Auckland Association continues, “that other centres shall consider the suggestions put forward and return them to us recommending such amendments and additions as would, in their opinion, be of benefit.” SANDERS CUP CONDITIONS Concerning revised conditions for tho Sanders Cup races the Auckland Association is most willing to co-oper-ate with the other associations in an endeavour to improve the yearly contest, and there is not the slightest wish on its part to force through any conditons as to type of craft which may not be suitable to other centres, the circular proceeds. The Auckland Association’s advocacy of a larger type of craft has been put forward solely from experience in class racing in the type advocated, namely, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s 18 ft. restricted class.

It is quite open for any type of craft to be suggested by any centre, but if the Jellicoe 14ft. one design class is to bo retained, then, in the opinion of the Auckland body, strictest adherence to the design and specification should be definitely agreed upon by all clubs, states the letter. Jn addition, further restrictions should be enforced giving effect to the intention that each competing craft should be of the same shape, weight.and rig, thus reserving tho race into a trial of seamanship and skill only.
