In the Market Place

CANADIAN ONIONS SOON ORANGES IN SHORT SUPPLY Canadian onions will appear at i the City Market auctions in about 1 three weeks' time, when the prices ; will probably be slightly lower than thoee now quoted for the American product. The condition is generally very similar. There is ; ~ a fairly large duty payable by the 1 Canadian exporter, and prices will ! probably be slightly in advance of the New Zealand product, j Tho condition of mandarines from i Australia, early this .week was very indifferent and low values ruled in all except prime grades. There will be a further shipment of these and other citrus fruits next Tuesday. Oranges are rather short at present • and will be very scarce before the next shipment comes to hand from the Cook Islands in about three weeks’ time. Lemons and Poorman oranges are still dull of sale, as also are tree tomatoes. Prices ruling for apples are about the same as last week. Good quality Nellis pears are selling well. Californian grapes are dull. Heavy supplies of cabbage, lettuce, i celery and leeks came forward at the auctions again this morning. There were also fair supplies of new potatoes and other* vegetables in season. Asparagus came forward much more freely. The demand in all lines was fair, with practically no changes in prices. Moderate supplies and a fair demand for eggs has kept prices level. Duck eggs are offering at low rates, the chief supply being of A grade first quality. Both demand and supply of farmers’ butter is moderate. A heavy supply ok poultry came forward and, with brisk competition, prices showed a small increase. Cockerels were still scarce and any choice lines offering were quickly snapped up at high rates. Hens of all breeds were penned in large numbers, selling strongly throughout the sale. Ducks and drakes were offered in smaller numbers and the demand just equalled the supply. Day-old chicks were more plentiful and a better tone* prevailed for this line, prices generally being the best so far this season.
