“TUTANKHAMEN”
OPERATIC SOCIETY’S REVIVAL The forthcoming production of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society, “Tutankhamen,” is a revival of the brilliant operatic success which was scored by the society in 1923. At the close of the first performance there were scenes of such enthusiasm that popular interest in the production was assured. Although the season was extended for three extra nights and another week’s season was played at a later date, many people were unable to gain admission. Not only has tho story of the play, which will be presented at His Majesty’s Theatre for a season commencing on September 25, been brought into line with recent discoveries in the tombs, but additions have also been made to the lyrics and ballads. Features of “Tutankhamen” are a chorus of 65, a ballet >f 20, and a cast of 10 principal players. The attractive musical score comprises four-part harmony, octettes, quartettes, trios and solos, sung by some of the leading artists in Auckland. Altogether this year’s play will be produced on a much more lavish scale than the original, particular attention being paid to the scenic effects, which are in the hands of Mr. A. Lindvell, who has been able to draw on his personal knowledge of Egypt in painting the scenery.
