OBSTETRICAL TRAINING

TRUST FUND OF £6,000 UNIVERSITY CHAIR SUBSIDY Press Associatio)i WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Tho executive ot the New Zealand Obstetrical Society, at its half-yearly meeting today, decided to* hand over £6,000, being the surplus of the endowment over and above the £25,000 required for endowing a chair of obstetrics, to tho Otago University Council, tps a trust fund to be used for the benefit of obstetrical education in tho Dominion by means of travelling scholarships of obstetrics and diseases of women for New Zealand graduates of medicine, and also for the endowment of research work in obstetrical matters in the Dominion.

The society’s solicitors advise that it is quite in order for the surplus to be used for this purpose. Tho trust will bo administered by a board consisting of representatives of Otago University, the medical school, and tho Obstetrical Society. Tho society considers that the greatest benefit to the Dominion will result if for the next 15 years the revenue from this £6,000 is devoted entirely to travelling scholarships, but in order to make provision for the distant future it has included the word “research” in the title of the trust. REQUEST FOR THE SUBSIDY. Later in the day 3 0 members of the executive from all parts of New Zealand waited on the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education, and requested that a subsidy on the £25,000 handed over to the university authorities on May 21, for the purpose of endowing the chair of obstetrics, should be made available immediately. Tho deputation pointed out that the university authorities had 7 made all arrangements for advertising in Britain for applications for the New Zealand position, but until the subsidy was vailable they did not feel justified in proceeding! further. Tho Minister assured the deputation of his desire to assist the council in the appointment. He said the Cabinet had decided this week that it would pay to the Otago University Council interest on the amount of the subsidy due until the fuy subsidy was available, thus making it possible for the university authorities to take the necessary steps.

Applications for the chair have to be lodged in the High Commissioner’s office in London in January.
